Light Reflective Value refers to the percentage of light that is reflected by a paint color. The lighter the color, the higher the number on a scale of 0-100. Black for example has a Light Reflective Value of 0% and absorbs all light and can get very hot as a result.

As per our guidelines, dark colors, with a Light Reflective Value (LRV) less than 45% should be avoided as they absorb heat and could cause excessive movement, dimensional distortion and/or severe resin bleed. Our warranty covers weatherboard that is primer under-coated and painted with two top coats of quality oil based or high-grade acrylic paint with a LRV greater than 45.

Alternatively, you can opt for Thermally Modified Cladding which allows for darker paint colors – see Pineclad TMT

Before painting, please refer to national building standards: NZS2311-2017 Guide to Painting of Buildings. Weatherboards must be painted at an Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC) as per these guidelines.
